Links to Free Software
These links include free alternatives to various software
packages. All software on this page is free and/or open-source, and
they are usually better than their commercial counterparts.
Firefox Alternative to Internet Explorer. If you
are still using Microsoft's Internet Explorer, it is time to switch
to Firefox. In addition to safer web surfing, there are many
plug-ins you can install to enhance your surfing experience.
FoxIt PDF Reader Alternative to Adobe Acrobat. It opens
in a fraction of the time that the Adobe Reader does. Though not as
powerful as the full (and expensive) Adobe product, it is sufficient
for most people.
Microsoft Security Essentials Free anti-virus from Microsoft.
One of the best free anti-virus products available.
Notepad++ This is a great little text editor. It is much more
powerful than Notepad that is built into Windows.
PDF
Forge Alternative to Adobe Acrobat. You can
use this to create your own PDF files. It can also be installed and
shared on a server and made available to network users. Though not
as powerful as the full (and expensive) Adobe product, it is
sufficient for most people.
Picture Resizer 2.0 Microsoft once released a great little
freebie that easily resized pictures. Unfortunately it hasn't been
updated to run on Windows Vista or XP. This version not only runs on
these platforms but offers many more options.
VLC Media Player VLC is an excellent altenative to Windows
Media Player. VLC plays almost anything, including DVDs. Highly
recommended.
